Straight answers about the DMV, tests and tickets.

Most guides to this are written by companies selling you a course. We do not sell courses, so we can tell you when the answer is no.

Traffic school by state

The rules differ enormously. Some states dismiss the ticket, some only stop the point being added, some reduce points you already have. Each guide is checked against that state's own official source.

Never pay for this

Booking a DMV appointment is free in every state. If a site is charging a fee to "secure" or "find" you an appointment, close the tab and go to your state's own .gov site. Reselling appointments is being actively cracked down on.

Common questions

What is Driving Answers?

An independent guide to dealing with the DMV and traffic tickets in the United States. We explain how appointments, driving tests, REAL ID, license points and traffic school actually work, state by state.

Is Driving Answers a government website?

No. Driving Answers is a privately run, independent website and is not owned or operated by the DMV or any state government agency. We never charge for anything a state provides free, and we always point you to your own state's official .gov site.

Why trust this over a traffic school's website?

Most pages answering these questions are published by companies selling the course, which gives them a reason to tell you it always helps. We do not run courses, so we can tell you plainly when traffic school will not remove your points or is not worth buying.

Do you charge for anything?

No. The guides and the VIN decoder are free. DMV appointments are free to book everywhere, so never pay a third party to book one for you.
